Kids’ entertainment in India


Kids’ entertainment is the fastest growing sector on Indian television. There was a time when children were discouraged from watching television as it was believed that they will be influenced by Western culture by such programmes. However, the scenario is completely different today. Television is encouraged for children with the belief that TV programmes would help the child to know about the world through visual medium. It is also believed that TV programmes help children to be more creative, inquisitive and also more empathetic.


Anyway, all these things depend on the TV channels you select for your children. Needless to say, there are a number of TV channels, which show violence and profanity to an extent that they become completely unsuitable for children. The best thing is that today televisions come with the feature of Child Lock, which can be used to block the channels unsuitable for children, rendering the whole experience of satellite TV enriching for them.

There are a large number of channels catering to the need of children in India today. One of the best channels in this regard is Nickelodeon. It started as a cartoon channel, but today, it has widened its scope of programmes by incorporating non-cartoon content as well. Viacom 18 has launched Nickelodeon in a large number of countries around the world with requisite customizations. For example, although you would find certain popular American cartoons on this channel, most of its programmes are conceptualized and created in India itself. In this way, Nickelodeon has managed to maintain its international value and at the same time, cater to the sensibilities of Indian children in a better way.

The best thing is that Nickelodeon has been diversified according the age of the viewers. Viacom 18 noticed that most programmes aired on Nickelodeon could not be enjoyed by toddlers. So, they launched Nick Jr, which caters exclusively to the taste of toddlers. The launch of this channel has made parents very happy as they can keep their toddlers engaged for hours now and not worry about a thing.

Same goes for teenagers. When Viacom 18 discovered that Indian teenagers had started to find the programmes on Nickelodeon childish and were switching to youth channels, they launched Nickelodeon Sonic. Today, Nickelodeon Sonic is so popular that even adults have started enjoying its programmes. The quality of programmes aired on Nickelodeon Sonic is top notch and can keep you glued to the screen for hours.

There are a large number of characters created by the brand of Nickelodeon, which have entered the pop culture in India. All these things make the sector of kids’ entertainment a very profitable segment.
